Catherine Martini Incorporates Her Vision for Global Sustainability Into Her Work

Catherine Martini, Senior Manager on the Carbon Removal team with Bridge Partners, is a committed environmental professional with over 15 years of experience leading dynamic teams and executing successful international environmental consulting projects. She also previously worked with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, consulted for the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute, been an expert reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and was a co-founder of ParisAgreement.org which for several years provided data analysis surrounding the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Paris Agreement negotiations.

Read on for more on what motivates Catherine’s commitment to sustainability, her thoughts on the importance of corporate sustainability efforts, and how her sustainability values show up in her professional and personal life.

LEARN MORE: About Catherine’s background

What interests you in sustainability?

“My interest in sustainability is primarily driven by my vision for an equitable world empowered by transgenerational sustainability. I want there to be a healthy, sustainable, planet for our children to inherit. I see the Paris Agreement as the primary vehicle to get there (in fact, I am a big Paris Agreement geek!). The Paris Agreement is the global community’s collective pact to limit human-caused climate change to 1.5°C (2.7°F) compared to preindustrial levels. Making the Paris Agreement a reality will require economic and social transformation–essentially, it will take all of us doing whatever we can wherever we can. Countries, corporate entities, and citizens alike are all in this together. We must transition the world towards a decarbonized global economy. I see it as my life’s work to support this transition in whatever ways I can big and small.”

What are some ways you are personally sustainable?

“I personally incorporate sustainability into my daily life by walking and biking whenever possible. Living in a vibrant city like Washington D.C. makes this easy and exciting. I also minimize flying whenever possible and purchase offsets when I must fly. I choose to follow a mostly plant-based diet (although I do cheat from time to time!). I attempt to reduce my need for new consumption of material goods (clothes, household items, etc.) and purchase secondhand when possible. I am in a privileged position to be able to source a large portion of my food organically or locally, reducing chemical inputs to the food system and reducing supply chain footprints for my diet.”

Keeping a sustainable lifestyle can be a challenge. Catherine offers some valuable advice on how to approach personal sustainability:

“In reality, whatever choices we make in our individual lives, no matter how big or small, make an impact. Every little bit helps. It’s more important to have many people moving towards a sustainable lifestyle imperfectly than to have a few individuals doing so perfectly. What’s important is that we make a start and keep going!”

How does it feel to deliver meaningful results for orgs that are hoping to accomplish sustainability goals?

“The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report indicates the global community needs to move further and faster–“limiting warming to around 1.5°C (2.7°F) requires global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 at the latest, and be reduced by 43% by 2030” (IPCC). Bridge Partners’ clients are shifting global markets towards this outcome in a transparent manner, sharing their learnings and challenges along the way so we can all go further, faster. Getting to work at Bridge Partners with ambitious corporate clients makes sustainability work come alive and transforms my daily work life into a vehicle for realizing my vision of transgenerational sustainability for our planet.”
